New York Mills had a pair of dominating performance at the top of their singles line-up, and saw two other matches go to a third set, but the Lady Eagles fell short at home Thursday with a 5-2 loss to Park Rapids.

"Today we played very competitive and entertaining tennis in beautiful, near perfect weather," head coach Gary Bach said.

Leading the way for Mills was a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins by Isabelle Resch at No. 1 singles and Missy Hendrickx at No. 2 singles.

The contest came down to the final two matches played at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles. At No. 4 singles, Victoria Selander lost a close match. After winning the fist set, 6-4, she dropped the next two, 6-2, 6-1.

The match No. No. 3 doubles was even closer. Krista Guldseth and Jenna Esala won the first set, 6-4, then lost the second, 6-2 before falling in the third set, 7-5.

"Going in we thought we had a good shot at picking up a couple of team points with this doubles line up, along with two or more from the singles slots," Bach said. "It didn't work out quite the way we planned, but it was sure fun to watch. It was a match our players will learn from and build on for next week."

Wadena-Deer Creek will be in New York Mills on Tuesday, Sept. 22 for Parent's Day.
