PHS Volleyball: Hawley upsets Jackets in final home game

John George

It was an up-and-down night for the Yellowjacket volleyball team Tuesday as they hosted Hawley in their final regular season home game. Unfortunately, there were more downs than ups as Perham committed 60 errors and put a damper on Parent's Night with a 3-1 loss to the Nuggets (20-25, 25-14, 25-22, 26-24).

"There was no will to win tonight as a whole," head coach Dan Christenson said. "They seemed to be content playing from behind, and staying there."

Perham committed 16 hitting errors, 28 dig errors and 16 serving errors on the night. They had won 10-straight over Hawley since 2000.

"Poor serve receive and poor transition made it frustrating to run an sort of an offense," Christenson added.

The team's lone senior, Elisa Moenkedick, had a big night for the Jackets. She finished with 14 kills, four blocks and 11 digs.

"It was a disappointing evening for Elisa tonight," Chistenson said. "We were unable to get six people to play together as a team to bring home a win for her in her last regular season home match."

The loss gives Perham 6-3 record in the Heart O' Lakes Conference. They are 11-10 overall heading into their final regular season game.

Regular season ends

The regular season will come to an end on Oct. 22 at Detroit Lakes (8-9, 3-2 Mid-State). Perham won the meeting with the Lakers on Sept. 8, 3-0, for their 15th straight win over D.L. It will be an important game for section seeding and may impact which of these two teams will get a first round playoff game at home next week.

Section 8AA playoffs are scheduled to begin with play-in games on Thursday, Oct. 29 at the higher seeds. The 8AA tournament will continue on Oct. 30 and run through Saturday, Nov. 7 with the championship match at a site yet to be determined.
