The Lady Jacket basketball team didn't have to wait long to begin defense of their Heart O' Lakes Conference title. Perham opened the season Tuesday night at Prairie Wind Gymnasium with a 65-35 win over conference foe Lake Park-Audubon.

The win was the first in the career of Perham's new head coach, John Gullingsrud. He takes over for Keith Johnson, who was 44-11 in two seasons with the Yellowjackets. Johnson is now working for Barrel O' Fun at their Phoenix, AZ. plant.

It didn't take long for Perham to show off the fast break style Gullingsrud wants to employ. A pair of three-pointers by Kaylan Huber and Steph Miller helped ignite a 22-4 run that gave the Jackets a 24-6 lead.

Perham had their biggest lead of the half at 41-20 before LP-A hit a shot at the buzzer to make the score 41-23 at the half.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Jackets used a 15-1 run to open a 56-24 lead. Despite running time in the second half due to a 35+ point differential, all 11 Jacket varsity players got into the game.

Perham had four players in double figures, led by Katrina Moenkedick with 14 points. She also pulled down six rebounds. Elisa Moenkedick added 13 points, 11 boards, four steals and three assists. Huber finished with four three-pointers and 12 points, and Miller added 11 points, eight assists and four steals.

The win extends the teams regular season conference winning streak to 23 games. Their last regular season loss to a HOL team came on Feb. 5 2008 against Hawley. It's Perham's fourth straight win over LP-A.

Last year, Perham went 18-0 in the conference to with their first HOL title since 1991.

The Perham girls will hit the road for their second game of the season, which will be Dec. 4 at Pelican Rapids. The Vikings were 10-16 last year, 8-10 in the HOL. The Jackets knocked Pelican Rapids out of last year's playoffs, 86-51, and have won nine in a row over the Vikings.

On Dec. 7, The Lady Jackets return to Prairie Wind Gymnasium to host Ulen-Hitterdal. Perham has won four-straight over U-H, including a sweep over the Spartans last year by an average score of 74-19.5.
