NYM Girls Basketball: Mills wins in overtime at NCE

It took overtime to decide the battle between the Eagles Thursday night in Twin Valley. But the New York Mills Eagles were able to outscore the host Norman County East Eagles, 11-6, in the extra period to pick up a 71-66 win.

Mills shot 24 free throws in the first half alone, but were only able to make 12 as they trailed by one at the half, 31-30.

In the second half, Alicia Boe and Hannah Rutten combined for 25 of the team's 30 points as they battled to force overtime.

In the extra period, Boe hit a 3-pointer, went 4-for-8 from the line and scored nine of the team's 11 points to lead the Eagles to the victory. She finished with 27 points, going 12-for-16 from the line overall.

As a team, NY Mills went 22-for-42 from the line. The two teams combined for 51 fouls and 72 free throw attempts.

Rutten scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half and pulled down 15 rebounds. She grabbed her 1,000th career rebound earlier this season against Battle Lake and now has 1,036 for her career, placing her 5th on the school's all-time list.

Maggie Carlson and Brittnie Menze each finished with seven points and six rebounds. Sam Welter had seven boards, three points, three assists and two steals.

It's New York Mills fourth win in a row over their Section 6A rival.

Tuesday at Rothsay

On Dec. 15, the Lady Eagles will travel to Rothsay to face another Section 6A foe. Mills won the last contest between the two schools in 2008, 63-46.

Final game of 2009

The team's three-game road swing continues Dec. 17 at Verndale. New York Mills swept the Pirates last year and have won four straight in the rivalry.

The Eagles will have a 20-day break from competition over the holiday's. Their next game will be Jan. 7, 2010 when they host Wadena-Deer Creek at the Mills Sports Center.
