PHS Wrestling: West Fargo snaps Perham's hold at Sertoma Tournament

Packers break through for title; West Fargo ends Perham's four-year reign

West Fargo defeated Perham 48-15 on Saturday to win the Grand Forks Sertoma wrestling championship at the Grand Forks Central gymnasium. The win was a long time in coming, since the Packers had been runner up eight times in the 20 years West Fargo has competed in the Sertoma.

With the win, West Fargo ended the four-year title reign Perham had held on the tournament.

"They (Perham) are a really good team and a great program with a lot of history and are awfully tough to beat," West Fargo coach Kayle Dangerud said.

The Packers came out of the gate early, taking a 6-0 lead when senior Ryan Seamands recorded a pin at 2 minutes, 35 seconds against Mike Warne in the 135-pound weight class.

Big boys rule

West Fargo's strength, however, came in the upper weight classes, beginning with junior Eric Lehmann, who started a run of four straight Packer wins. He recorded a 57-second pin against Perham's Gene Schleeter at 171.

"We knew we had tough competition coming, but we were all pretty excited to compete against a really good Minnesota team and it means a lot to beat them," Lehmann said.

Eric was followed by senior Tyler Lehmann, who took down Chris Scheidecker in 54 seconds at 189.

West Fargo senior Scott Schiller, a two-time state champion, didn't disappoint at 215 as he defeated Ben Brill 19-3.

"Schiller and (Tyler) Lehmann are really our top two guys and our top leaders; they set the pace in competition and in practice," Dangerud said.

Five matches were determined by pins, four belonging to the Packers. Perham's only pin came at 285 as Jesse Hein beat Zach Vetter, who competed at 171 last season.

"They are a really, really tough team and it's going to take a special team to beat them and we are just not that team," Perham head coach Robb Moser said. "I thought they flat out beat us up around the board, with their technique and their hustle. They were just overall a better team."

West Fargo, which won four duals this weekend, remains undefeated heading into a holiday tournament in Rochester, Minn.

"It is nice to win here, but we still have a lot to accomplish. We need to keep improving in practice and we have the Minnesota tournament coming up, which has a lot of great competition and we expect to get humbled there," Dangerud said.
