PHS Girls Basketball: Perham holds off late Rebel run to win, 59-55

Kelli Meehl (20) goes to the floor for a loose ball, gets control, and eventually finds Lauren Guck for a lay-up during the Jackets 59-55 win over D-G-F Monday night.

The Lady Jackets returned to Prairie Wind Gymnasium Monday night to take on the last Heart O' Lakes team to beat them. Despite a late run by the visiting D-G-F Rebels, Perham hung on for a 59-55 win.

Coach Gullingsrud was hoping to get the Rebels into a running game, and they did early on. Perham went on an 11-1 run to open a 20-9 lead with 6:08 left in the first half.

The Jackets were up by as many as 16 points before D-G-F scored the final five points of the half to make the score 31-20.

The Rebels continued to close the gap in the second half and got as close as 33-27.

A lay-up and 3-pointer by Becky Stoll helped spark a 12-1 run by the Yellowjackets helped them regain a 45-28 lead.

Perham still led 50-36 with six minutes to play when D-G-F began to chip away. With 31 seconds left in the game, the Rebels had closed to four at 56-52.

But the Jackets withstood the run, and made just enough free throws down the stretch to secure the four-point win.

The Rebels handed Perham their last loss to a HOL team in the 2008 playoffs. The Jackets regular season HOL winning streak is now at 27 games.

Perham's last regular season HOL loss came Feb. 5, 2008 against Hawley, who they will host on Dec. 18.

The Moenkedick sisters were the difference in the game. Elisa finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive boards, five assists and two steals. Katrina scored 10 points, had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Lauren Guck was also in double figures with 10 points. Kaylan Huber and Becky Stoll each scored seven.
