The New York Mills Eagles let one get away from them Monday against a Section 6A team in the first round of the Concordia College Holiday Classic in Moorhead.

Mills led by as much as nine points in the first half, and 13 points in the second, but they lost on a buzzer beater by Ulen-Hitterdal's Troy Peterson, 70-69.

After the Eagles missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw attempt with nine seconds left in the game, the Spartans' Landon Schultz drove the length of the court, but missed a lay-up attempt. Peterson was on the spot with an offensive rebounds for U-H and his put-back went through the net as the buzzer sounded.

Isaiah Bauck scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half as Mills controlled the action. The Eagles had an early 19-10 lead, but U-H fought back to within one, 26-25.

NY Mills held off the surge with a quick 6-0 run, and they went into the half with a 34-28 lead.

The Spartans scored the first five points of the second half and eventually tied the game with 16 minutes left to play, 36-36. With 12:40 to play, U-H took their first lead of the game, 44-43.

U-H was ahead 51-49 when Adam Snelgrove's 3-pointer put Mills back on top, 52-51. That sparked a 15-0 run for the Eagles that put them up, 64-51 with eight minutes to play.

The Spartans responded with a 13-3 run of their own to get back in the game. Mills still led 69-64 with 50 seconds left when U-H made their final push.

A lay-up by Neil Hendrickson was followed by a Mills turnover. Cody Zimmerman followed with an offensive rebounds and basket to make the score 69-68 with 9.7 to play when Mills was fouled and put to the line.

Joining Bauck in double figures for New York Mills was Snelgrove with 14 points. Tanner Wegscheid had nine points and Bryce Pazdernik and Spencer Imsande each finished with eight.

The Eagles beat U-H, 57-47 last year at Concordia.

On Tuesday, Dec. 29, Mills took on another 6A team, Wheaton/Herman-Norcross. Due to early holiday deadlines, the final score was not available at press time. Check online at for results.

The Eagles finished the Classic on Dec. 30 against Barnesville.
