PHS Girls Basketball: Perham beats Battle Lake at Pelican Rapids Tournament

The Perham girls basketball team won their opening round game in the Pelican Rapids Holiday Tournament on Tuesday, advancing to the championship game of the Valhalla Division with a 65-54 victory over Battle Lakes in Pelican Rapids.

"I thought we showed good improvement from our last game," stated Perham head coach John Gullingsrud. "We cut down on the number of turnovers we committed and I thought we played hard and we played well."

Perham was led by Elisa Moenkedick and Katrina Moenkedick with 16 points each. Elisa also grabbed six rebounds in the game. Jessica Speicher had seven points and seven rebounds, while Kayla Huber added six points and six boards.

Battle Lake was led by Lindsay Nelson's 23 points.

"We knew we were in for a tough game tonight against a very balanced Perham team," noted head coach David Marso of the lady Battlers. "I thought we hung in there even after falling behind early. Lindsay kept us in it with some timely shooting in the first half and Carley Nelson did a nice job of handling the Perham pressure. Overall, I was pleased with the effort, but we know we have some work to do if we want to compete at a higher level."

Perham shot the ball at a 58 percent clip in the contest.

The Yellowjackets will now face Underwood for the title at 5:30pm Wednesday in Pelican Rapids.
