PHS Wrestling: Perham 2nd at HOL Tournament

John George

The Perham Yellowjackets showed they have strength at the top of their line-up. But the Frazee Hornets showed they have the depth.

Frazee's depth was the difference as they stopped Perham's three year reign atop the Heart O' Lakes Conference by winning the conference tournament Saturday in Breckenridge.

Frazee had five individual champions, four runner-ups and three third place finisher's to finish with 262 points. The Jackets had six individual champs. But only one runner-up and one third place finisher.

Three of Perham's six champs were repeat winners. Leading the way was Sam Warne.

Warne, who is closing in as the school's all-time wins leader, won his fourth HOL title by taking the 125-pound title. After two first period pins, Warne beat Frazee's Bruce Lemon in the championship, 11-3.

The other repeat champions were Luke Sailer and Charlie Schmitz.

Sailer won the 103-pound title last year, and won the 112-pound weight class this year. Schmitz was the repeat winner at 152 pounds.

Also winning conference titles were: Taylor Doll (140), Ben Brill (215) and Jesse Hein (Hwt.). Hein was runner-up as an eighth grader, but finished in sixth place last year. Brill finished in third place at 189 last year. Doll did not compete in the previous two HOL Tournaments.

It's Frazee's 37th HOL Championship. Perham had won three straight HOL titles, and have won 11 conference championships overall.

TRF Duals

Perham took part in the Prowler Duals on Thursday in Thief River Falls.

Perham dropped their first match in TRF to No. 12-A Badger/Greenbush-Middle River, 33-28.

Perham had a 16-15 lead after a win by Doll at 140. B/G-MR won three of the next four matches to pull ahead 29-19.

B/G-MR secured the win at 215, where No. 9 Cole Christianson beat Brill, 17-9. But Hein ended the match on a high note with a pin in 1:12 over No. 1 ranked Alex Yeager.

In the finale, Perham beat their Section 8AA rivals, TRF, 35-29.

Led by wins from three ranked wrestlers, Jacoby Bergeron (No. 1, 112), Chaz Abrahamson (No. 3, 125), Kyle LeDuc (No. 4, 135), TRF opened up a 20-11 lead through seven matches.

Consecutive wins by Andrew Moberg, Schmitz and Cody Palubicki put Perham back in the lead, 26-20. A decision by Scheidecker and a pin by Brill secured the Jacket victory.

Perham and TRF have met in the last two Section 8AA championships, both won by the Jackets.

The Jackets will be wrapping up their regular season already this next week. Tonight (Feb. 4), Perham will head to Fergus Falls for a Section 8AA clash with the Otters.

On Feb. 6, the Jackets will look to capture their fourth straight Paynesville Invitational championship.

Pool play starts at 10 a.m. with Perham taking on Canby. The Jackets will face Paynesville in their second pool match.
