NYM Wrestling: Eagles 2nd at PRC

John George

At the beginning of the season, NY Mills head coach Eric Niemi said the section, and the Park Region Conference were up for grabs.

He was right.

The top three teams at Saturday's PRC Tournament in Parkers Prairie were very close. But in the end, defending champion Browerville/Eagle Valley had a bit more depth to edge New York Mills and Otter Tail Central for the title.

B/EV finished with 188 team points. They had three champions and two runner-ups, with three finishing in third place and three more in fourth place.

Mills was second with 176.5 points. They also had three champions and two runner-ups. But the Eagles had only one third place finisher, and four in fourth place.

The third place points were the margin of victory for B/EV.

OTC, the third place team with 154.5 points, had two champs and two runner-ups with three third place finishers.

Mills' 103-pounder, Shane Novak, repeated as PRC champion. He pinned PL/PR-B's Anthony Philipson for the title in just 37 seconds.

Novak earned the tournament's Fall Award, picking up his three wins, all by fall, in a total of 3:23.

His older brother, Jordan, also won his second PRC championship, taking the 135-pound title.

Jordan also beat a PL/PR-B wrestler for his championship, taking a 8-0 decision from Darian Rubner. He had also won a conference championship in 2008.

Mills' third champion was heavyweight Landyn Saewert. He pinned No. 4-A Colin Turchin of B-H/V in 3:36 for the title.

The Eagles runner-ups were Tommy Selander at 112 pounds, and Jarrod Norton at 215.

Mills will have a nine-day break as they head into the Park Region Conference Tournament on Feb. 6 in Parkers Prairie. Opening round matches start at 10 a.m.

The Eagles have won 25 Park Region Conference titles, the last coming in 2006. They finished fifth last year as Browerville/Eagle Valley ran away with the title, followed by Osakis, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus.

Shane Novak (103) is the only returning individual champion for the Eagles. Roberts (119) and Jordan Novak (135) were PRC runner-ups in 2009.

Win over PLPRB

Mills didn't have much trouble with PRC foe Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in a dual last Thursday. The Eagles won five of the nine contested weight classes for a 39-16 victory.

Shane Novak, Maison Roberts and Tyler Patron had pins for Mills.

On Feb. 9, Mills went to Clarissa for the Eagle Valley Triangular with Browerville/Eagle Valley and United North Central.

The Eagles swept the triangular, beating PRC champs B/EV, 42-32, and UNC, 57-9.

The wins gave Mills a perfect 7-0 record against PRC teams in dual matches this season.

"Against Browerville we filled our line-up for the first time and all of our wrestlers found a way to contribute," head coach Eric Niemi said. "That's what we will need in the section tournament."

Record on the horizon

It could be a record setting week for Jordan Novak. The senior is set to become the school's all-time win's leader. He could pick up No. 169 tonight (Feb. 11) when the Eagles head north to face Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in a dual match.

Novak's current record stand's at 168-37. The school's all-time leader, Peter Mursu, had a career record of 168-42-1.

The W-H-A dual is the final match of the regular season. Mills will get a high seed in the Section 6A team tournament, giving them a first round home match on Feb. 16.

Mills has won eight-straight duals snce mid-January.

The Eagles will host the Section 6A team semifinal's and championship match at the Mills Sports Center on Feb. 20.

NY Mills will also host the 6A Individual Tournament Feb. 26-27.
