The 2010 wrestling individual tournament for Section 6-1A was held in New York Mills last Friday and Saturday at the Sports Center.

Five NYM Eagles advanced to the finals Saturday and all five advanced to the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament which started Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

NYM freshman Shane Novak at 103 pounds, lost the championship round to Border West's Gus McCarthy 5-0 and later pinned Barnesville's Stuart Brand to win the True Second match.

Novak was also second in section last year and finished fifth in state for the 2008-2009 season.

At 125, sophomore Eagle wrestler Maison Roberts won a 9-4 decision over Border West's Ryan Murphy.

Roberts was the number three seed and he beat the number two seed to get into the title bout.

Last year he was sixth in the section.

"I wrestled in kindergarten and first grade then rejoined in eighth grade," Roberts said after the match. "This will be my first time to the state --unbelievable!

"The match started off with good shots. He [Murphy] hangs on to you pretty good."

Returning Section 6-1A champion at 135 pounds, NYM senior Jordan Novak still reigns as the champ after defeating Pelican Rapids wrestler Jim Cossette with an 18-9 major decision.

Novak was second in state last year.

"This will be my third time at state," Novak said. "I went as a sophomore. And last year, as a junior, I was second in state. I could have wrestled better today, but it got me in the tournament..."

In his first time to finals, at 215 pounds, Mills senior Jarrod Norton was defeated by Parkers Prairie grappler Tyler Walsh in a 9-6 decision.

Finishing sixth in sections last year, in Norton's first time to finals he has garnered a section runner-up and an opportunity to wrestle at state.

Eagles heavyweight Landyn Saewert was section runner-up last year and went 1-2 at state.

Saewert went up against Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale's Colin Turchin on Saturday, as Turchin started off with a lead, but the score was tied at 4-4 when Saewert pinned him.

"Earlier [this year] he was up 5-0 but I beat him 21-15," Saewert remarked after the match with the casual shrug of a senior wrestler who "has wrestled since kindergarten."

After taking a deep breath, Saewert looked around and added, "But you bet I was worried. He had me up in the air once and it would hurt to fall from that height."

Twenty-eight boys --two from each weight class -- will go to the state tournament from Saturday's Section 6-1A Individual Tournament finals. Five are from New York Mills, five from West Central Area/Ashby, four from Bertha-Hewitt-Veradale, and four are from Border West, four from Parker's Prairie, two from Wadena-Deer Creek, two from Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah, one from Pelican Rapids and one from Barnesville.
