The Eagles No. 8 seeded boys' basketball team suffered what head coach Brian Dunrud called "a difficult loss" on Monday night.

New York Mills lost on their home court as the No. 9 seeded Waubun Bombers won 66-64 in the first round of the North Subsection of Section 6-1A tournament play.

Eagles junior Isaiah Bauck scored 11 first-half points, as Bomber's senior center Tim Smith was sitting on the sidelines with a sack of ice on his ankle.

But Mills was behind Waubun 30-25 at the end of a nail-biter on a back-and-forth and up-and-down first half.

By the end of the second half nobody had any nails left to bite.

The Eagles caught up right away in the second half, pulled ahead a few times (35-34, 38-34, 43-41, 57-56).

"We were ahead by six with four minutes left," Dunrud said. "But we missed some shots and couldn't finish 'em off when we were up by six.

"Waubun played well, and executed on the stretch and we had a tough time stopping point guard Sam Lerud. I'll go home and watch the tape. There are many things we could have done better."

Bauck was high scorer for the Eagles with 26 points, followed by sophomore Adam Snelgrove with 19, junior Eric Tumberg with seven points and junior Tristan Huwe with six points.

Rockets upset Eagles in season finale

Playing on their home floor, the Underwood Rockets dealt a 65-49 upset to the Eagles in the finale regular season basketball game for Mills' boys Tuesday, March 2.

The Eagles got behind 31-10 early in the game.

At the half, the score was 41-28 and the soaring birds just could not lift themselves up to within 10 points for the remainder of the game.

"The boys just didn't have the energy," Dunrud commented. "They came out flat, seemed lethargic, and just couldn't climb over the top of the mountain."

Junior wing Isaiah Bauck was high scorer for NYM with 26 points.

Sophomore post Spence Imsande scored seven points.

"Our defense was weak although it improved in the second half," Dunrud said.
