Mills 7th grade hoopsters compete in post-season tournaments

The New York Mills Eagles 7th grade boys participated in three area tournaments after their regular season ended.

The first tournament was March 6 in Detroit Lakes. After leading the entire game the Eagles ended up losing to DL after the Lakers were able to go on a 5 point scoring run at the end to put them on top and give them the win 41-39.

The second game was against a very good Perham team. The Eagle's Damon Tumberg lead the team in scoring and played very well but the Eagles fell short by 12 points to the Yellowjackets 43-31.

The final game found the Eagles playing another Lakers team but this time it was the Eagles who came out on top. It was Dustin Gaudette's offensive rebound and put back to give the Eagles the 39-37 win in Overtime.

The second tournament was held March 20 in Park Rapids. The first game was against Frazee where Evan Perala orchestrated the offense nicely from the point guard position and the Eagles cruised to a 37-25 win over the Hornets.

In the second game it was the Eagles defeating the Menahga Braves. It took a superb defensive effort from the team, especially Chance Pettow, who was charged with the task of guarding Menahga's leading scorer. The Eagles were lead in scoring by Zachary Bauck.

The third game came down to the last play for the Eagles to beat Park Rapids 33-32. It was Zach Bauck dishing the ball to Dustin Gaudette cutting hard to the hoop for the bucket and the win.

The last game was a battle between the two undefeated teams, New York Mills versus Nevis. The Eagles were down to six players and were without the services of Damon Tumberg who sprained his ankle in the previous game. Despite some great outside shooting from Sam Weber, who was deadly behind the arc, the Eagles came up short and lost 43-57.

The final tournament was the Spring Fling held in Perham on April 10th.

The first game the Eagles found themselves down by one with three seconds left on the clock and with the ball out of bounds under their own hoop. Chance Pettow called the play and got the ball inbounds, the shot went up and rimmed out in an exciting finish to a very close game.

Unfortunately the Eagles lost 38-37 to Menahga. During the second game the Eagles were down early by 12 points. But they fought back and beat a good Pelican Rapids team 43-34. In the final game the Eagles were banged up, tired and not playing like their normal selves. Despite Ted Hendrickx going three for three from behind the arc the Eagles lost to a very tough Wahpeton team in their final game of the year.
