Perham Girl's basketball awards announced

Senior Elisa Moenkedick led a heralded 2009-2010 Perham basketball team.

All-time school leading scorer Elisa Moenkedick led the way on the court last year and took home six awards at the girl's basketball banquet.

"Elisa was a great leader for our team and showed the younger girls what it meant to work hard every day," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

Moenkedick, a senior, used the same work ethic off the court and transferred it to the classroom. She was recognized with an academic all-state award to go with her basketball accolades.

Fellow senior Jessica Speicher joined Moenkedick as an academic all-stater.

"This was her first year of extended playing time at the varsity level," Gullingsrud said. "She was very versatile for us. She could play both inside and outside.

Speicher was a hard-nosed player, who often had the bruises and floor burns to show for her efforts.

Led by the two seniors both in class and on the floor also garnered Perham with a Team Academic All-State Gold award.

Every team needs someone to be a floor leader and get the ball to the scorers and that was junior guard Steph Miller, who led the team in assists.

"Her quickness and decision making set the tone for us on offense and defense," said Gullingsrud.

Points can add up from all over the offensive zone, but many games come down to bombs from behind the arc or last minute free throws. Junior guard Kaylan Huber provided many of those much-needed points during the Yellowjackets' season.

She led the team in both free throw and three-point shooting.

"Kaylan spread the floor," said Gullingsrud. "She was also our back up point guard, which gave us the luxury of having two excellent ball handlers on the floor the majority of the time."

Returning with Miller and Huber for next year's squad is Katrina Moenkedick, an AP all-state honorable mention award winner as a sophomore to go with her all-conference distinction.

"She is one of the more athletic players in the area," said Gullingsrud. "She was towards the top of most statistical categories in the conference and will be a fun player to watch the next two years."
