Yellowjacket softball breaks even winning three of six

Jessica Speicher lines a shot back at the pitcher in Perham's 16-1 rout of Crosby-Ironton.

The Perham softball team capped a busy week by throttling an inexperienced Crosby-Ironton team 16-1, a forfeit in three innings and blanking the Rangers 10-0 in game two.

The Yellowjackets poured the runs on quickly, eight, three and five runs in the three innings of play in game one.

Letdowns can happen when playing an inferior opponent, but Assistant Coach Howie Kangas was on his team to stay in the game.

"Don't let your hair down just because you have a big lead," he said.

The team kept the pressure on forcing the Crosby-Ironton head coach to concede the game two innings shy of the typical five-inning, ten-run, mercy rule.

Tiana Lynne knocked in four runs to lead the Jackets at the plate.

Little changed in game two. Steph Miller scored three times and Etta Scheidecker and Kristina Januszewski had two hits each to lead to another quick finish.

Conference foes Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek were not so easy to dispatch earlier in the week.

The Yellowjackets earned a split with the Cardinals winning 4-3 and dropping the second game 5-1.

Scheidecker was 2-4 with two RBI. Januszewski strucke out five and walked five in the win. She would take the loss in game two where the Yellowjacket bats were limited to just three hits.

Wadena-Deer Creek swept the Yellowjackets with scores of 5-3 and 11-0. Januszewski took the loss in both games continuing to log most of the innings on the rubber.

Sub-section playoffs

The Yellowjackets enter the south sub-section playoffs as the number three seed and will face number six Breckenridge.

The Cowgirls finished the season at 8-10 losing six of their last seven games.

Perham finished the year 10-8 winning five of their final eight starts.

The winner will travel to Thief River Falls, Thursday, May 27, to play the winner of the two-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek and number seven Pequot Lakes.
