A rather less than stellar pregame infield warm-up foreshadowed woes in the field that contributed to a season ending 5-3 defeat in 6A playoff baseball action for New York Mills.

Seven costly errors led to all five unearned runs for the Frazee Hornets.

The Hornets proved they learned how to win games this season. After a slow 1-4 start, the Heart O' Lakes Conference champs had won 11 of 13 games coming into Tuesday's game.

"Errors certainly hurt us, Head Coach Chris Bushinger said. "Obviously, when it comes to playoffs and it is single elimination, you have to play your absolute best game each and every game. We didn't do that."

The Eagles threatened to score but were missing timely hits that would have given Adam Snelgrove a win on the mound.

"I thought Adam pitched good enough to win the game and I thought Ted Rohr did a great job in relief," Bushinger said.

Snelgrove threw three innings, allowing the only four Frazee hits, walking and striking out two. Rohr threw perfect ball in relief, finishing the remaining three innings allowing one base runner on an error, no hits and fanning three.

"For both pitchers we didn't get the big hit when we needed it. We put ourselves in position to score some runs but we didn't put the ball in play when the opportunity was there for us. The Frazee pitcher pitched a very good game."

Matt Brower pitched a complete game for the win, striking out 11 Eagles, walking only two. The Eagles were able to get the bat on the ball collecting six hits against him, but seven men were left stranded on the bags.

"Frazee did exactly what needs to be done. They got runners on base, put the ball in play, and moved the runners around," said Bushinger.

Mason Roberts was 3-4 at the plate for the Eagles scoring one of the three runs. Derek Gaudette singled in his first at-bat and scored on a double by Rohr. Tanner Wegscheid walked and came around to score ahead of Roberts in the fifth.

Spencer Imsande led off the last chance seventh with a double bringing the tying run to the plate with none out.

Tristan Huwe struck out. Wegscheid was put out on nice sliding grab by Hornet shortstop Matt Viste in foul territory behind third base.

Derek Gaudette refused to make the last out singling to left keeping Imsande on second, before Roberts forced out Imsande on an unassisted play at third base to end the game on his only unsuccessful trip to the plate.

Of the eight runs scored in the game, none were earned.

The Eagles end their season at 8-9 after a 7-3 start.
