Cavanagh advances to state golf meet

Dan Cavanagh advanced to the state golf meet at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn., June 15-17, along with fellow Yellowjackets Holly Karkela and Kaylan Huber.

Dan Cavanagh's 74 was one stroke off the lead and good for a three-way tie for third at the Section 8AA golf meet at Long Bow, in Walker, Tuesday, June 1.

Cavanagh is the lone Yellowjacket from the boys squad to make the state meet. This is his third trip. Holly Karkela and Kaylan Huber will join him from the girls team.

"For all his struggles in the regular season, Dan stepped up and made it to state," Head Coach Jeff Tweeton said. "He's a solid player who will only get better as he learns how to score and how to stay a bit more under control. He enjoys the competition, and has a way of rising to the occasion, especially at sections. This is the third year in a row he'll be going to state--not many golfers can say that."

Junior Conner Hedstrom and Michael Herzog, an eighth-grader, both from Detroit Lakes tied for the top individual spot.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how Dan performs at state," said Tweeton. "He's been there twice now, so it's not like he's in awe of the players or the course. He knows what to expect, so I'm anticipating a good showing."

Other Perham section finishers: Nic Smith--78, Evan Arvig and Kyle Dykhoff--83, Alex Phelps--85 and Kelly Nelson--95.

As a team, the Yellowjackets finished fifth with a 318. DL won the section with a 303. Hawley--310, Roseau--312, Crookston--313 and East Grand Forks finished behind Perham at 329.

"That's tournament play," Tweeton said. "The pressure does funny things to players. I think Evan and Kyle will be ready for next year, as will a couple of other JV players, notably Nick Bahls and Austin Erickson."

Head Coach Jeff Tweeton's comments from last week centered on a need for the team to shave shots, 15, to be precise. His prognostication proved accurate as Perham finished exactly 15 strokes behind the leaders.

The state meet will be held at Ridges at Sand Creek, in Jordan, Minn., June 15-17.
