Stormy weather kills chance at Millers comeback

Snurdbirds pitcher Jake Lund two-hit the Millers in a 5-1 win that was the only loss by a NY Mills team during the day of baseball July 3.1 / 2

The umpire received news at the end of the seventh inning that a thunderstorm that dumped over three inches of rain between Detroit Lakes and Perham was eight miles away. He called the game with the Millers down 5-1.

There was just enough time for a fireworks show and that is more than can be said for the Millers' bats.

Midway Snurdbirds starting pitcher Jake Lund held the Millers to two hits, one run, fanning six and walking four.

Chad Keskitalo and Jarrod Norton got the only hits for the Millers. Norton knocking in the only run with a second inning base hit that scored Alex Helmeke who had reached on a base on balls.

Lund retired the Millers in order five of seven innings, in command of a nasty breaking ball and some heat.

Jeremie Weller battled on the mound keeping the Millers in the game. Weller scattered 12 hits, allowing four earned runs of the five scored, walking only two and sending four Snurdbird batters back to the pines.

Midway threatened to score in all but two innings. Weller saw batters reach third base in every inning but the fourth and sixth.

The game was close into the seventh. The Snurdbirds came to bat in the seventh holding a 3-1 lead. Weller retired the first two batters before a tough play in the hole at shortstop led to a Mike Baune throwing error and a double by Steve Wetterling and a single by Lund put up the final two runs.

The Millers threatened in the bottom of the seventh but the rally was killed by an inning-ending double play. Baune lined to right field and Keskitalo, who was on first base, was doubled off. Leadoff hitter Nick Ostlie had reached first to start the inning but was forced out at third base when a lazy Texas leaguer by Keskitalo left him stranded between the bags.

The loss drops the Millers record to 2-13 on the season.
