Count It! Clinics to be held

In a month of basketball coaching clinics galore, the Count It! Coaching Clinics will be held in three cities in two days in Minnesota in October.

The clinic events are an offshoot of the Panther Hoops Coaching Clinics that began in Cass Lake more than a decade ago by former coach Dan Ninham.

"Our purpose remains the same even though we are changing host schools," said Ninham. "We want to offer top quality instructional clinics with big name presenters to give coaches ideas on how to maximize their future success."

Bob Hurley of St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, N.J., is making his third trip to Minnesota. Hurley presented in Cass Lake a few years ago and at the state coaches clinic last year. Two weeks ago, Hurley was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hurley continues to have impressive numbers including 984 career victories in 38 years of coaching. He also has 25 state parochial titles and three USA Today national titles (1989, 1996, 2008). Coach Hurley will be presenting at Thief River Falls High School on Saturday, October 9 and at Crosby Ironton High School on Sunday, October 10.

Dave Galovich, of Crosby Ironton High School, will enter his 33rd year of coaching next season with a 540-258 record. In his 25 years as CI's coach, he led the team to three state runners up finishes, including two out of the past three seasons. Coach Galovich, a Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee in 2007, will be presenting at Crosby Ironton High School on Sunday, October 10.

Jim Russell of Central Lakes College will also be presenting at Crosby Ironton High School on October 10. Russell has won 192 games in his 12-year career at CLC and advanced to the state tournament nine times. He is a three-time Minnesota Community College Coach of the Year.

Jamie Dixon, of the University of Pittsburgh, will be featured in a one-coach clinic at Rochester Lourdes High School on Sunday, October 10. Dixon was named the 2009 Naismith National Coach of the Year and the 2010 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year.

He is entering his eighth season at Pitt with a 188-54 record. Dixon has guided the Panthers to two Big East titles, two 30-win seasons, seven 20-win seasons, one NCAA Elite 8, three NCAA Sweet 16's, and the first ever number one ranking and seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Dixon was the main presenter at the Panther Hoops Coaching Clinic at Bemidji a few years ago that drew over 140 coaches.

"We will continue to offer coaching clinics as long as coaches are interested in coming to our events," said Dan Ninham.

The fee for each clinic is $65, with a staff rate of $55 per coach and registered by October 1. Pre-registration is encouraged. Late and event day registration is $75. The fee includes lunch, refreshments, a drawing chance, and a notepad and clipboard. Each clinic will have on court demonstration with players.
