The New York Mills volleyball team just missed their first win of the season in a nail biter at Staples. The Cardinals capitalized on a few minor errors to sneak out a victory, 15-13, in game five to take the match 3-2.

"It was a nail biter," said Head Coach Amy Koskela. "The girls started out a little sluggish, but we hadn't had a game in a week."

The Eagles warmed up in game two winning 25-17.

"By game two we really started to come around - the girls were working together, putting the ball down, and having fun out there, which is always fun to see."

Staples came back to win game three 25-18 before a frenzied game four taken by the Eagles 25-22 to level the match.

"Game four was intense, and when it came to game five, just a few minor errors brought us out on the losing end. I'm proud of how much the girls improved since the Frazee game, and how prepared my bench was to go in anywhere they were needed."

The Eagles continue to improve with each performance and are getting closer to notching that first victory of the year.

"They truly worked as a team, especially during some of the long volleys that took place throughout the night."

According to Koskela, luck was one-sided on the Cardinals home floor. All the game wins came on only one side of the court.

The tough match against Staples started off a busy week for the team. Thursday, Henning took it to the Eagles 3-0, sweeping the match 25-13, 25-11 and 25-19.

Over the weekend, the Eagles participated in a tournament in Pelican Rapids.

Scores from the tourney were 21-25; 24-26 versus Hillcrest; 6-25; 12-25 versus Pelican Rapids; 22-25; 25-23 versus Rothsay; 11-25; 12-25 versus Lake Park-Audubon and 9-25; 16-25 versus Battle Lake.
