NY Mills ends streak with 26-13 victory on the road

The New York Mills football team can start counting a streak of wins after ending a 27-game losing skid by beating Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg 26-13 on the road.

"We played a very good game offensively and defensively," said Head Coach Matt Radniecki. "Our kids did a really good job of making tackles right away. Our line did some nice things as far as getting off blocks and making tackles."

Erik Tumberg had a strong game rushing the ball 22 times for 112 yards and a score. Tanner Wegscheid had two touchdown passes, one to Tumberg and the other to Spencer Imsande.

"We made a few big plays and that was the difference in the game."

On the first play from scrimmage, Charlie Peeters hit Spencer Imsande for a 40-yard gain on a halfback pass and the Eagles duplicated what has been happening to them from opposing teams early in games. They got off to a fast start.

The first drive ended with Tanner Wegscheid scoring from two yards out.

After holding KMS to a three and out opening drive, the Eagles took the ball down the field and scored again going up 13-0.

Timely passes with good hard running by Tumberg led to the Wegscheid to Imsande aerial touchdown from 15 yards out.

NY Mills kept the pressure on driving again and stalling on the KMS 10-yard line.

The Eagles lined up for a field goal but ran a fake with Wegscheid hitting Tumberg for a 10-yard touchdown pass to go up 19-0.

KMS would answer, driving the field and scoring with 10 seconds left to make the halftime score 19-6.

The Eagle onslaught would continue right out of the locker room as the defense forced a Fighting Saints punt before Tumberg broke a 24-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles up 26-6.

KMS cut the lead to 26-13 and had one final drive going but a Nick LeTourneau interception sealed the victory for the Eagles.

"This was a great win for us and our seniors who have stuck with it and never gave up," said Radniecki. "I am very proud of their effort and give them credit for keeping a positive attitude toward the football program. We did some really good things and had a nice bus ride home, a lot of excitement."
