Perham boys remain undefeated
The Perham boys basketball team got its eighth win in as many tries at Barnesville Friday night with a 54-26 victory.
The Trojans might have left the gymnasium with acute cases of triskaidekaphobia, after only scoring 13 points in each half.
Barnesville entered the game winners of four straight and Perham had come off back-to-back games against state-ranked opponents. A letdown was certainly a possibility.
But Perham's defense, as it has all year, stymied the Trojans. Barnesville had been averaging over 60 points per game. They did not get half of that against the Yellowjackets.
Zach Gabbard led the scoring for Perham with 19 points, including five bombs from three-point land. Nick Tobkin added four bombs scoring 14 points.
John Hagen had 10 points for Barnesville.
Perham ups its Heart of Lakes Conference record to 3-0. They are tied atop the standings with Hawley. Pelican Rapids is 2-1. West Central Area and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton are 1-2. The Trojans fall to 0-2. Frazee and Breckenridge also remain winless in the conference.
Perham 64, Pequot Lakes 60
A top ten Class 2A state-ranked battle was all it was proposed to be as Perham knocked off a second consecutive ranked opponent with a 64-60 victory over visiting Pequot Lakes.
Perham entered play ranked number five. The Patriots came in at number nine.
The Yellowjackets found themselves in odd territory down 29-27 at the break.
But Gabbard and Sam Stratton came out after an extended halftime period to quickly take the lead not to relinquish it for the remainder of the contest.
Perham stretched the lead to double digits but not for long as the Patriots continued to hang in the game.
The Minnesota Timberwolves' mascot Crunch entertained at halftime extending the break with his wacky antics.
Perham's second half lead would shrink to a bucket and flex to six over the final minutes of the contest.
A wild final 30 seconds ended in a Mark Schumacher slam to put the game away.
Pequot Lakes' Kurtis Moody led all scorers with 25 points. Brian Craig added 16 points and Jordan Anderson 10 for Pequot, which was without the services of two players, Thomas Parker and Nevin Greer.
Nick Tobkin scored 13 to lead the Yellowjackets. Schumacher had 12. Gabbard and Stratton each scored 11.
