The Concordia Cobbers had an historical evening at the Minnesota Duals Friday night in Perham.

The Cobbers won three duals - including two against NCAA Division III top 10 teams - and also had two wrestlers break the school record for career victories.

Seniors Justin Berns (157) and Phil Moenkedick (184) both won three matches to run their career win totals to 125, a new school record.

"It was fun," Cobbers head coach Clay Nagel said. "A lot of great things happened for our program."

Berns and Moenkedick were teammates in high school for Perham.

"A lot of Perham people here so it was cool," Nagel said. "It was pretty special for those guys."

Along with Berns and Moenkedick, Perham native Nathan Schmitz (197) won all three of his matches for the Cobbers. All three wrestlers combined to go 9-0 on the night.

No. 7-ranked Concordia beat No. 3 Augsburg 26-11; defeated No. 6 St. John's 32-10 and beat unranked St. Olaf 42-6 to complete a perfect night. Augsburg is the defending Division III champion.

Frazee natives Justin Skillings (St. Olaf) and Ben Anderson (Concordia) did not compete, Anderson due to injury and Skillings having just returned from Central America.

Bringing Division III wrestling to Perham was the idea of longtime Frazee writer and photographer John Dermody.

"Dermody suggested it years ago to bring some college wrestling here to this high school wrestling hot bed," Perham Athletic Director Fred Sailer said.

With Nagel involved, along with help from Perham Head Coach Robb Moser, Sailer was able to make the idea a reality.

"It's a wonderful idea for people to see something they've never seen before. It's a different sport than high school wrestling. It's exciting to have it here and wonderful for our community."
