Perham grabs two seed in Section

Jesse Hein got two matches in during Perham's last home triangular of the season, a rare feat this year. He dominated Staples-Motley's David DeYonge to an 11-4 decision.

The Perham wrestling team was awarded the second seed in section 8-2A after recent victories over section foes Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls.

"DL was one of our better performances of the year," Head Coach Robb Moser said. "Anytime you can go get wins against section teams without all your top wrestlers that's a real plus."

Perham defeated DL 42-25, Saturday, Feb. 5.

Senior James Harlow, 112 pounds, has been out recently with an injury but is expected to return soon.

Sam Pirrotta has moved up from 103 pounds to fill in Harlow's spot.

"Pirrotta wrestled very admirably," Moser said.

Perham just missed making it three section victories in a row losing a close match to the top section seed Staples-Motley. The loss was the second to the Cardinals this year, this time despite winning seven of the 14 matches.

"Anyone in the section is very beatable on any given night. We know we can get some more points."

The Cardinals, however, would come back from an early deficit to put the Yellowjackets away before the lineup card got to Jesse Hein, an almost assured six points.

Perham held a 18-9 advantage after a Pirrotta pin and victories by Brandon Lueders, Luke Sailer, Brady Sazama and Ty Haverland.

But Staples-Motley was victorious in the next five matches, including pins at 171 and 189 pounds to cement the lead at 31-18 with two matches to go.

Cody Nylander pinned Cody Drone at 2:50 to cut the Cardinals lead to seven going to Hein.

David DeYounge managed to go the distance with Hein, giving up a close 5-3 decision to the undefeated Perham heavyweight.

Fergus Falls got up 9-0 looking to keep Perham winless at their home triangular, but a Lueders pin and a major decision from Josh Werner got Perham on track and they cruised to a 46-22 victory.

Sazama, Haverland, Nylander and Hein all gained victories. Nylander and Hein got theirs by way of fall. Hein pinned Tommy Waver in 17 seconds. Nylander's pin came at 5:10.

Seniors Gene Schleeter and David Langlie both got wins in their last appearances on the home Perham mat.

"I am really proud of our seniors," Moser said. "It's been a wonderful year for them. You always want the cream to rise to the top and they have."

Final seedings for the Section 8-2A wrestling team tournament are set.

The top seed will be Staples-Motley, followed by No. 2 Perham.

The rest are: 3. Thief River Fall 4. Detroit Lake 5. Fergus Falls. 6. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley. 7. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus. 8. Fosston/Bagley. 9. Roseau. 10. Blackduck. 11. United Clay Becker. 12. East Grand Forks/Sacred Heart.
