Eagle girls advance in 6A playoffs

The New York Mills girls basketball team opened up 6A section playoffs with a 49-35 victory over Norman County West.

EmaLeigh Roberts was all over the court scoring 19 points and flirting with a triple double grabbing eight rebounds, along with nine steals.

Ellie Rutten controlled the inside notching another double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The game was close for a half. Norman County West led at the break by a point, 19-18.

"We started out the game very sluggish," Head Coach J.J. Weller said. "We didn't look like we knew what we wanted to do on offense and we were tentative passing and moving the ball around."

The second half was all Rutten and Roberts. Unlike the first half, where the lead changed hands constantly, the duo slowly pulled the Eagles away from Norman County West.

"We drove the ball a little bit more and got some of their girls into foul trouble which helped us."

The difference was Roberts, who darted around the court putting on defensive pressure and scoring in bunches.

The even game at the half stretched to an eight-point lead at the midway point of the second half before growing to double digits.

Fittingly, Roberts would seal the victory, controlling the ball and making free throws down the stretch.

"EmaLeigh had a huge night for us applying pressure on their guards and then was able to hit her free throws to help us out. Our posts also did a nice job rebounding collecting 21 between the three of them. It wasn't our best game overall, but we were able to pull it off and live for another day."

The Eagles now have the unenviable task of facing #8 ranked Ada-Borup on the road Thursday, Mar. 3, at 7 p.m.

The Cougars are 22-2 coming off their 66-59 Pine to Prairie Conference Championship victory over Bagley.
