Jackets ready for playoff run

Jordan Anderson looks to dish the rock in Perham's regular season finale win at Wadena-Deer Creek.

The Perham boys basketball team finished the regular season like they have every game but one, with a victory.

After defeating the number one ranked Class A Sebeka team, 65-60, earlier in the week, the Yellowjackets traveled a bit south down highway 71 to take out the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, 65-34.

The game was over early as the Jackets were cruising comfortably by the half, up 41-18.

Nick Tobkin poured in 27 points to lead Perham. Jordan Cresap scored 10 points. In total, nine Yellowjackets got on the score sheet.

"We have been playing well," Head Coach Dave Cresap said. "We need to play at this high level for a few more weeks."

Perham awaits the winner of the play-in game between Frazee (2-24) and Park Rapids (1-23).

What should be a walk in the park in the first round for Perham will get heated quick in the quarterfinals. A win over the Frazee-Park Rapids winner will keep Perham at home versus the winner of four-seed Hawley and five-seed Crosby-Ironton.

Perham swept the season series with the Nuggets, 62-45, at home and 69-55 at Hawley (16-8).

Perham gave Crosby-Ironton (14-12) its worst defeat of the season, 61-20, in December.

"The section playoffs are going to be as good as ever," Cresap said. "There are quite a few teams that could win it."

Two of those teams are Pelican Rapids, the three-seed and the only team to defeat Perham this year, and Pequot Lakes, the two-seed.

The Vikings and Patriots are lined up for a quarterfinal matchup. The winner will face Perham if the games turn out as seedings predict.

"I think Pelican and Pequot in the second round will be quite a game," Cresap said. "There could be some great first round games along with the second round. We hope to be around in the end."

Perham, Pelican Rapids and Pequot Lakes are all ranked in the top ten AA state rankings.

Pequot Lakes is #4; Perham is just behind at #6 and Pelican Rapids comes in at #10.

Pequot Lakes (22-4) opens the playoffs at home versus Wadena-Deer Creek (9-15). Pelican Rapids (22-4) opens at home versus Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (10-13).

Pequot Lakes and Pelican Rapids have not faced each other this season.
