The Perham boys golf team is off to a hot start and after coming in victorious at the Heart O' Lakes Conference meet at Balmoral, Monday, sit atop the conference standings as the early team to beat this year.

The Yellowjackets were led by Kyle Dykhoff's 37, good for a second place finish behind last year's 1A state champion medalist Beau Hanson, of Frazee.

Hanson shot 34, two under par.

Cody Cook, of Hawley, Boon Mahar, of Barnesville and Jordan Johnson, of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton rounded out the top five. All three golfers carded 38's.

Perham's Evan Arvig and Dan Cavanagh both carded 38, as well. Tom Huus came in with a 39. Nick Kalina and Nick Bahls continued Perham's consistent scoring with 40's each.

The meet caught a break in recent weather, which has been horrific for spring sports. Sunshine and an almost helpful breeze brought golfers around the course in with low scores.

In the team competition, Perham took home a solid five-stroke victory over Barnesville. The Yellowjackets combined for a score of 152, Barnesville 157, Hawley 161, Frazee 162 and Pelican Rapids' 170 round out the top five schools.

After two HOL conference meets, Perham leads the conference with two points, Barnesville and Hawley are tied for second with five points; Frazee is fourth with eight.

Yellowjacket scores:

Dykhoff 37, Arvig 38, Cavanagh 38, Huus 39, Bahls 40, Kalina 40.

Team scores: Perham 152; Barnesville 157; Hawley 161; Frazee 162; Pelican Rapids 170; West Central Area 175; Battle Lake 185; Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 194; Breckenridge 197.

Saturday's Perham Invitational was a hiccup between conference victories for the Yellowjackets.

Perham finished sixth out of 7 teams in less than perfect conditions.

Team leader Dan Cavanagh missed the meet.

"We still didn't do much," Head Coach Jeff Tweeton said.

Team scores: Staples 303, Frazee 334, Barnesville 338, Warroad 339, Fargo North 342, Perham 351, Park Christian 381.

Medalist was Zach Israelson from Staples with a 72; Beau Hanson from Frazee had a 72; Nick Forsberg from Staples had a 74.

Perham scores Evan Arvig 78; Nick Bahls 91; Kyle Dykhoff 88; Andrew Hurt 97; Nick Kalina 84; Matt Hanson 96.

Perham's next match is Thurs., May 5, at Pelican Rapids.
