Perham's two top seniors, Holly Karkela and Kaylan Huber are to be expected near the top of the leader board for Perham's girls golf team, but a pair of sophomores made moves last week solidifying the Yellowjackets as the early team to beat in the conference.

Perham's combined team score of 370 was 25 strokes better than second place Hawley at 395.

The wind howled early in the day last Friday but it did nothing to stop the Perham girls golfers from taking the title at the Pelican Rapids Invitational at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes.

"It was probably one of the windiest days I've ever seen in the spring," Head Coach Cory Solberg said.

Karkela's 87 was tops over 18 holes and good for medalist honors. Hawley's Lexi Matfeld finished four strokes back shooting a 91. Ali Smith, a Perham sophomore, took third place with a 91. Huber was the third Yellowjacket in the top five, finishing fifth, carding a 95.

Other Perham scores were Destiny Mitchell 102 and Tina Scheidecker 115.

The Detroit Lakes junior varsity squad made an impressive fourth place finish, albeit 40 strokes behind the champion Yellowjackets.

Winds gusted in the low to mid 20 miles per hour near the noon hour and the teams got off the course before the gales hit the 40 mph mark later in the day.

Jackets win at Hawley

The Yellowjackets made it a clean sweep on back to back days taking the top three spots at Hawley Thursday, led by Karkela's medalist score of 42.

Huber was a stroke back at 43 and sophomore Rachel Nelson made a run at Perham's top two seniors with a third place round of 44.

"It was a great team effort," Solberg said.

Chaiwon Youn, of Pelican Rapids finished fourth with a 45. Lexi Matfeld, Hawley and Liz Hustad, Pelican Rapids, rounded out the top six shooting 46.
