Cavanagh medalist at Longbow

Dan Cavanagh attempts a putt on the hilly fourth hole at Frazee Golf Course during HOL Conference action.

The Perham boys' golf team tested out the course for the Section 8-2A meet last week, as Perham's Dan Cavanagh shot a two-under par 70 for medalist laurels at the Longbow Golf Course in Walker.

Detroit Lakes hosted the meet, winning the team title with a score of 304. The Yellowjackets tied for fourth with Crookston shooting a 319.

Perham and Detroit lakes squared off again over the weekend at the Fargo North Invitational at Village Green Golf Course in Fargo, N.D.

Cavanagh tied Tanner Lane of Detroit Lakes for a share of 12th place carding a 150.

Evan Arvig was five strokes back shooting 155. Nick Kalina shot a 170.

Eden Prairie took the team title with a combined weekend score of 577.

As a team, Perham finished in 11th place with a 645.

Fargo South's Landon Poss shot a 138 for medalist honors.

Thursday, May 5, the Yellowjackets finished second at the Heart O' Lakes Conference meet in Frazee.

Kalina led the way for Perham with a sixth place finish. He shot a 37.

"Nick Kalina has played well and has been pretty steady," Head Coach Jeff Tweeton said.

Perham's team-wide consistent shooting continued with all six Yellowjackets finishing within four strokes of each other.

Cavanagh was a stroke back of Kalina with a 38, along with Arvig and Kyle Dykhoff. Matt Hanson and Nick Bahls carded 41s.

"Dan and Evan have put up some nice numbers of late," Tweeton said.

Perham team score of 151 was good for second place behind Hawley/Ulen Hitterdal's 148.

Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal's victory picked up a point on the Yellowjacket conference lead.

Perham leads the Heart O' Lakes with seven points. Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal is second, two points back, with nine points.

A conference victory is worth one point. Second place is two points.

Barnesville was third with a 156; Battle Lake finished fourth with a 158, followed by the host Hornets at 167 to round out the top five.

"As the season progresses and the boys get in a few more rounds, they're starting to learn how to manage the course a bit better. In short, their mental games are beginning to come around. Their physical skills are, for the most part, as good as anyone's, but they need to think a bit more when they're playing."
