Perham tennis third at Mid-State

The Perham tennis team followed up on their first meet victory of the season with a third place victory at the Mid-State Conference meet in Park Rapids.

Perham totaled 17 points without an individual champion in singles or a team title in doubles.

"I am very proud of our boys today," Head Coach Kyle Knutson said. They played some pretty tough competition but were able to keep their focus and stay determined."

Chad Hofland, at four-singles, compiled four points to lead the team.

"Chad played well today," Knutson said. "He was tired and sore (knees) but wanted to get the job done. He played with determination and didn't give up."

Hofland's only loss came at the hands of Detroit Lakes' Alex Fondrick, who breezed through the competition. Hofland got off to a good start with a 6-3, 7-5 opening round victory and sealed second place in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Al Schoeneberger and James Hersch at two-doubles and Trevor Meece and Mike Botzet at three-doubles scored three team points with third place finishes.

The top Perham doubles team of Austin Andreen and Madison Paridon picked up a pair of team points with a 7-5, 6-3 consolation victory for fourth place after a tough opening draw matched up against eventual champion Staples.

"Doubles keeps improving and playing well together."

Jordan Cresap had tough draws at the top singles spot. He dropped his opening match 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation match.

Randy Swanson and Dillon Shields both came up with consolation match victories to earn two team points each.

Swanson needed all three sets to defeat Park Rapids' Chris Shaw 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Shields took consolation honors in straight sets over Park Rapids' Jeff Dickinson 6-2, 6-4.

"Cresap had a tough draw. Playing first singles you always end up against everyone's ace. We have some pretty good players in our conference, Jordan included, but they had the upper hand today. Swanson and Shields hit well and both have so much potential to grow into."

Perham more than doubled the output from last year's conference meet team, which put up only eight points in a fourth place finish

"Coach Kosiak and I continue to like what we see. Overall, we are happy with taking third place to DL and Staples. Both of them are pretty solid this year."
