Jacket tennis ousted from playoffs

Staples-Motley ended the Perham tennis season with a 6-1 defeat at Staples, Monday, May 23.

Dillon Shields notched a victory at three singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Robin Melse.

"Coach Kosiak and I are very proud of how our boys finished," Head Coach Kyle Knutson said. "They were playing much better tennis towards the end which shows we improved."

The Yellowjackets had one match victory on the season defeating Park Rapids 4-3. They also were on the losing end of two other 4-3 decisions where the meet came down to one match. The prior year, Perham was winless.

"They did what we asked and worked very hard," Knutson said. "Now we just need to keep rolling into summer with the mindset of improvement. That is when the real gains will be made if the boys can commit the time."

The Yellowjackets lose only one player, Trevor Meece, to graduation, and return everyone else for next season.

Six individual entrants traveled to Park Rapids for the individual first round portion of the Section tournament.

Perham finished out their 2011 season falling to individual opponents in both doubles and singles entries.

"Although we don't have anyone moving on in the tournament this year, Coach Kosiak and I are very proud of how much our boys have improved since the beginning of the season. I think they have the drive and focus to continue to hit and improve over the summer and are already talking about next year."

Wadena-Deer Creek's Alex Korkowski defeated Jordan Cresap. The match went the distance with Korkowski winning by one break of serve in the third set, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
