Jackets HOL runners-up, third at sub-section

The Perham boys golf team got nipped by one stroke to take runner-up honors at the Heart O' Lakes Conference championship held at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes.

The Yellowjackets shot a combined score of 324, one putt from champion Hawley-Ulen-Hitterdal's 323.

Dan Cavanagh continues his quest to return to the state championship meet. He was the low Yellowjacket shooting a 73, good for second place and one stroke behind Frazee's state champion Beau Hanson's 72.

Evan Arvig took fifth place shooting a 78.

Brett Syverson of Hawley-UH was third with a 74. Conner Paul of Barnesville was fourth with a 76. Hawley's Brandon Sletmoen rounded out the top six with a 79.

The victory gives Hawley the regular season HOL title. Their cumulative score of 17 points was one better than Perham's 18. Frazee was a distant third with 39 points and Barnesville was a point back with 40 for fourth place.

Cavanagh, Arvig, Nick Kalina, Kyle Dykhoff and Nick Bahls were all named to the Heart O' Lakes all-conference team.

The Yellowjackets advanced out of Sub-sections, which were also held at Wildflower.

Perham finished third behind Hawley-Ulen-Hitterdal and Detroit Lakes.

The Lakers had three of the top five individual finishers, including medalist Karter Smith, who shot a 71. Tyler Bauckol, 73, and Tanner Lane, 76, took third and fourth. Syverson was second shooting a 73.

Cavanagh was again the low Yellowjacket with a fifth place finish carding a 77.

Arvig shot an 81; Kalina 88, Bahls 89, Dykhoff 90 and Brandon Olson shot 94 for Perham.

The Lakers, Nuggets and Yellowjackets all qualify for the Section meet Thursday, June 2, at Long Bow Golf Club, in Walker.

The top six golfers not on qualifying teams will also travel to Walker. They are Wadena-Deer Creek's Tyler Fix, 80, Michael Wing, 85, Bryan Silvers, 85, and Nick LeTourneau 92; Pelican Rapids; Casey Bruggeman, 83; and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton's Jordan Larson, 83.
