NY Mills Legion heads to playoffs

NY Mills catcher Tristan Huwe tags out Frazee's Hayden Hoskins at the plate in Frazee's 6-1 Legion baseball victory at NY Mills.

The New York Mills Legion baseball team heads into the District 9 South Sub-district tournament in a place team members are not used to being: hosting a play-in game.

NY Mills, the number eight seed, will play at home versus the number nine seed, Pelican Rapids. Pelican Rapids has one victory on the season coming in with a record of 1-15. Their only victory was a forfeit from NY Mills July 6.

Due to the Eagles high school team making a run at the state championship at the end of the school year, the Legion team was forced to forfeit half of their games and cram the remainder of their schedule into the remainder of the summer season.

NY Mills finished season play with a record of 4-11, winning two of their last three games.

The final week of the season began with a defeat of Hawley. At the time, Hawley was 9-2 and on top of the league standings. They finished the season 12-3 and enter the playoffs as the number two seed.

Tristan Huwe and Daniel Kraft combined for the victory.

NY Mills knocked out 14 hits led by Brandon Kupfer going 3-3 with two doubles and and a huge three-run home run in the sixth inning to tie the game.

Tristan Huwe, Shane Novak, Adam Snelgrove and Spencer Imsande all had two hits each in the victory.

"We hit the ball well tonight and played good defense against a pretty good team," Head Coach Tim Kupfer said.

Last Saturday, NY Mills defeated Dilworth 10-6.

Imsande was the winning pitcher.

"He pitched really well for not pitching in about two years," Kupfer said.

Imsande pitched 5 1/3 innings before handing the ball to ace Snelgrove, who came in with bases loaded in the sixth and struck out the final two outs and cleaned up in the seventh for the save.

Derik Gaudette was 4-4. Novak went 3-4 and Tyler Patron had a grand slam.

Frazee came to town a virtual rematch of the Section final game from high school playoffs and Frazee enacted some revenge against a beleaguered NY Mills squad with a 6-1 victory.

Brandon VanWatermulen went the distance for Frazee pitching seven innings, facing 32 batters. He allowed 10 hits, one earned run, and two walks. He struck out five.

NY Mills threatened in the first six innings leaving 10 men stranded on the bags in the game.

Derik Gaudette scored the only NY Mills' run after singling with one away in the second. He advanced to second when his base hit was mishandled in right field.

Adam Patron doubled knocking in Gaudette to cut Frazee's lead to 5-1.

The Hornets got on the board early against Adam Patron who was knocked off the mound after one inning of work. He faced 12 batters, giving up five earned runs on four hits. He walked four batters contributing to the early struggles.

VanWatermulen added insult to injury in the top half of the seventh with a solo shot over the left field fence for the 6-1 final.

Snelgrove was 2-2 with two singles and stolen base.

Brandon Kupfer went 2-4 with two singles.

NY Mills defeated Pelican Rapids Monday night 12-1 in the Sub-district play-in game.

The North Sub-district bracket, which includes Perham, will not be available at the time of this week's FOCUS printing.

The South Sub-District Tournament will be an 8-team double elimination tournament with one play-in game.
