Cavanaghs take Zorbaz golf title

L-R: Tom Hanson - Zorbaz, Charlie and Jack Cavanagh - Perham, Bill Sholl - Fargo, Bob Hatlestad, Jr. - Hopkins, Rick Lynch - Hotel Shoreham.

Zorbaz 38th Pizza Masterz rolled to an exciting finish with the last two-foot putt dropping and the winning team edging the field by one stroke at the Detroit Lakes Country Club.

It was the father and son team of Jack Cavanagh and Charlie Cavanagh of Perham along with Bill Sholl of Fargo and Bob Hatlestad, Jr. of Hopkins holding on to the victory by a two-foot putt.

Jack drained a ten-footer on 17 and Bill made a knee knocker on 18 and the trophy was theirs.

The 18th hole pin was, as usual, on the side of a mountain and impossible to par as demonstrated by the second place team of Jeff Tweeton, Danny Morley, Jeff Cleveland and Mike Porter.

Holding on to a one-stroke lead and needing a closing par, when the dust settled it was a dreaded double bogey.

The winners and runners-up received classic hickory shafted golf clubs to admire and remind them of the most difficult pin placements possible without placing them in the sand traps.

Come on out and give it a try next year on June 27-29.

The Pizza Masterz Childrens Park was the recipient of the profits with taxes, maintenance and payments totaling nearly $7,000.00 this year. The tournament has contributed nearly $200,000 for its purchase and maintenance since it was opened.
