Silver Pirates Northwest League Champs

The Silver Pirates defeated the Carlos Whitecaps 6-5 in the opening game of a doubleheader to claim the Northwest League Championship.

Perham jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning but trailed 4-3 after two.

The Pirates got it going in the first inning with a lead off walk to Gary Grewe. Jason McClellan followed with a one-out double and both Grewe and McClellan scored on a two-out single by Jon Kotaska.

Carlos rallied in the bottom half of the first as two singles and a walk scored a run and left two on with one out. This set up the Web Gem of the game as pitcher, Greg Schmid snared a screaming liner up the middle (for the second out) and fired to first for the double play to end the inning.

Carlos put together a pair of hits to go along with a couple free passes and a sacrifice to score three runs in the second and take a 4-3 lead into the 4th inning.

Greg Schmid had a great at bat (fouling off 3 pitches) with a walk to lead off the Pirate 4th. Brad Kempe followed up with a perfect bunt and sacrifice to move Schmid to second. Gary Grewe single to move Schmid to third and Schmid came home to tie the game on a balk.

An inning later, the Pirates sealed the victory as Jim Nelson and Jon Kotaska singled ahead of a Terry Haus walk to load the bases. Greg Schmid then lofted a sacrifice fly to right scoring Nelson with the go-ahead run.

Brad Kempe promptly singled to score Kotaska with what would eventually be the winning run as Carlos came back with a run in the 6th.

Player of the Game: Ordinarily Jon Kotaska would have been "the Man" as he got the save on the mound going the last three innings allowing one run and striking out six. At the plate he was three for four with two RBI and two runs scored. BUT - Greg Schmid gets the nod as he picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound, had two quality at bats with a walk and sacrifice fly - he had the Web Gem and the key factor, he did all of this when he should have been on the disabled list. Great job both players and congratulations to Greg Schmid.

Top hitters: - Gary Grewe and Jason McClellan both had two hits and a run scored, Grewe had a walk and McClellan had a double and a stolen base. Four Pirates had single safeties - Jim Nelson, Terry Haus (Haus played an inspirational game also, as he should have been on the disabled list with Schimd), Rob Litzau and Brad Kempe. Kempe and Litzau also had an RBI.

This was the first outright title for the Silver Pirates in 18 years and they will open the State Tournament on Saturday evening in Jordan facing the hometown Millers.

The second game of the double header had to be played but the Pirate goals had been accomplished.

The Pirates were short on pitching and the score was indicative. Jason McClellan and Rob Litzau handled the mound chores in the shortened contest as Carlos won the game on the ten run rule with an 18-1 score.

Carlos scored in every inning including 9 runs in the second. Perham scored their lone run in the third as Terry Haus, Jon Kotaska, Jason McClellan and Jim Nelson singled. A double play cut the inning short and when the dust had settled Brad Kempe scored the run and McClellan had the RBI.

Jim Nelson and Terry Haus were the top hitters with two hits each while McClellan and Kotaska had the other safeties.

It was a banner regular year for the Pirates as they finished the regular season with an 11-4 league record and hope to come home with some State Tourney hardware.
