The Brandon-Evansville BlueDogs swept their way to the Region 16C baseball tournament championship defeating Leech Lake 9-4, the Midway Snurdbirds 8-5 and the Pelican Rapids Lakers in round three by a score of 5-4 to advance to the championship game.

The Pelican Rapids Lakers fought their way through the loser's bracket to get to the title game and also earn a birth in the state tournament.

The Lakers awaited the winner of the Vergas Loons and Midway Snurdbirds elimination game won by Vergas 3-0.

Right fielder Jason Hoffman did most of the damage going 2-3 with two runs scored and the lone RBI for the Loons.

Garrett Dahlgren got the win pitching a complete game allowing only five hits and no runs. He struck out eight and walked four.

For the Snurdbirds, Jake Lund kept them in the game with a complete game of his own. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, walked nobody and fanned 11 Loons.

The game was scoreless until the sixth when the loons put up a single run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

The game was delayed 15 minutes by rain.

Vergas took an early 1-0 lead in the semifinals over Pelican Rapids but the Lakers answered with four in the fourth and held the lead the remainder of the game for a 6-4 win to advance to the title game.

Adam Johnson went 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Todd Johnson had the big day at the plate going 1-2 with a run scored and four RBI.

All four RBI came on a grand slam.

Marcus Zitzow led Vergas going 3-5, while Loons' hitters in the 2-5 spots of the order went a combined 5-14 with all three RBI.

In the championship game, the Lakers held a 2-1 advantage after six.

Jan-Erik Lindberg doubled home Cole Anderson and Adam Johnson who reached on a single and a double for the 2-1 lead.

The BlueDogs' Nate Meissner scored an unearned run in the first inning.

The 2-1 lead lasted to the bottom of eight when back-to-back homers from Lee Nelson and Brent Meissner sealed the victory. Nelson's two-run blast to right field recaptured the lead for the BlueDogs 3-2. Meissner's solo shot near the left field foul pole added the 4-2 insurance.

Collin Modahl got the victory pitching all nine innings allowing two earned runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out 11.
