Hornets defeat Eagles 3-0

Jackie Imsande led the Eagles with eight kills in a 3-0 loss to Frazee. Alexis Tappe, #4, led the Hornets and all strikers with 18.

The New York Mills volleyball team, looking to get back to winning ways, got up early against Frazee in multiple games but were stung by Hornet comebacks leading to a 3-0 victory for the home squad 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.

"We went out there last night like I've never seen us play before, which was exciting to see," Head Coach Amy Koskela said.

The Eagles took leads of seven and five points midway through the first two sets were unable to hold leads dropping the first two 25-20 and 25-21.

NY Mills was also hampered by the loss of libero Brooke Kupfer, who left the match early in game two with a high ankle sprain.

The Eagles are in the midst of a 27-game losing streak stretching back to the 2009 season but showed more gamesmanship than last year's team.

"I think this year will be better, but now we need to strategize some more."

Down 2-0, game three started out rough with the Hornets getting out to an early 8-1 advantage. Frazee poured it on to a 17-7 lead and appeared to be cruising to the victory.

But the Eagles rallied to within five points at 22-17, causing Frazee to rally to put the Eagles away.

The Eagles' front line of freshman Ellie Rutten, sophomore Tor Kempenich and junior Jackie Imsande were able to dominate, at times, sending the Eagles on point scoring spurts.

"Hopefully, we can pull something together in the back row to fill everything in."

Imsande scored big points in game two which went to a tie at 20 and 23-21 before Frazee's Alexis Tappe pounded the ball to lead the Hornets.

Tappe dominated at net leading all hitters with 18 kills. McKinzie Tangen had 7 for Frazee.

Imsande led the Eagles with eight kills. Rutten and Kempenich had six.

Lexie Rankka led the way passing for NY Mills with 22 assists in the absence of Kupfer.

The Eagles will look for their first victory of the season when they host Staples-Motley Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
