The New York Mills Eagles volleyball team snapped a 27-game losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Staples-Motley Tuesday by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-22.

"The girls came out a little shaky in the first couple of points, but once they got in the groove, it was exciting to see their enthusiasm because of their successful plays," Head Coach Amy Koskela said.

The Eagles have been playing without starting libero Brooke Kupfer, who left the opening game of the season versus Frazee with a leg injury.

Starting middle hitter Jackie Imsande, who led the team in kills versus Frazee, left the Staples match in game three.

"We have some injuries and illness that I hope we can overcome quickly and keep improving." "We've had Amy Nebosis and Tori Paavola work on back row in the middle, since Brooke is out, but in game three we didn't have Jackie either."

Despite the two injuries, the remaining Eagles picked up the slack.

Tori Kempenich and Ellie Rutten led in kills with nine and eight, respecitively.

Lexie Rankka continued to move the ball around on offense in place of Kupfer. Rankka had 33 of the 37-team assists versus the Cardinals.

"We put down some nice hits and had some long volleys too."

The victory evened the Eagles' record at 1-1 on the season heading into Thursday night's matchup with Battle Lake.

The Battlers defeated the depleted Eagles 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-11.

Rutten led the way with 10 kills and three blocks. Kempenich was held in check with only three kills.

Rankka had 17 assists.

NY Mills (1-2) will get little rest as they head to the Pelican Rapids tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Battle Lake will be in Pelican Rapids for the tournament, along with the host Vikings, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Rothsay and Lake Park-Audubon.
