Jackets even conference record

Perham evened their Heart O' Lakes conference volleyball record to 1-1 after a road sweep at Breckenridge Thursday.

The Yellowjackets took the first two games handily, 25-14 and 25-13, before sneaking out with the 3-0 sweep by a two-point margin in game three 25-23.

Katrina Moenkedick and Brooke Mickelson led the offense for Perham with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

Miranda Lockhart and Moenkedick combined for 13 blocks on the defensive side.

Becky Stoll had 26 digs. Allie Christenson had 11 assists and Rayna Jacobson served up free points on seven aces.

The Yellowjackets improve to 3-9 overall, after playing a difficult pre-conference schedule, including many teams a class above Perham.

"Our opening schedule has been brutal," Head Coach Dan Christenson said. "In our first nine matches, eight have been again 3A opponents, two state-ranked - #8 Eden Prairie, #12 Hill Murray."

For the remainder of the season, Perham will see mainly 2A and 1A schools.

Spuds 3, Yellowjackets 2

The 3A Moorhead Spuds came calling to face the Yellowjackets Monday, Sept. 12 and left town with a 3-2 victory 25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-7.

The teams rotated wins for the first four games by identical scores before facing off in a race to 15 in game five for the match victory.

"Things are improving, but (we) still can't get over the mental part of the game."

According to Christenson, Perham came up just short in games one and five hoping for a strong start and a strong finish, but that was not the case.

"It is time to start rolling up some wins to get ourselves into a decent seed for the 8AA Section Tournament come the end of October. Don't count this team out. The talent is there; it just needs to be refined a bit."
