In front of a packed house for the "Cancer Awareness Match" at Frazee, Perham took command early but found themselves in a battle to the last point pulling out a 3-2 victory.

"I have to commend Abilgail Masten and the Frazee coaching staff for hosting this year's "Cancer Awareness Match" and doing it well," Head Coach Dan Christenson said. Upwards of $4.000.00 was raised for the Hospice of the Red River Valley (Detroit Lakes) from a silent auction, a dash for cash between sets one and two and a bake sale.

The match was a marathon and a rollercoaster all wrapped into two hours of play.

Perham senior Katrina Moenkedick stepped up in game five starting the final, shortened set off with a huge kill and a big block on the next point to put the Yellowjackets up 2-0.

Like the match, the Hornets would not go away in the final frame.

The score saw ties at three, four, five, six, eight and nine before Frazee made a surge for the three-set comeback taking an 11-9 lead in the race to 15.

Perham cut the lead to 11-10 on a tipped ball by Allie Christenson over the Frazee block that landed near the line.

Tina Scheidecker stepped up to serve and sent two service winners in a row at the Frazee defense to regain the lead for the Jackets at 12-11. Scheidecker had six serves and was the ace behind the line all night.

Moenkedick took over with the game on the line making it 13-11 on a big kill on a perfect set from Christenson. Christenson led Perham with 20 assists. Moenkedick had 14 kills.

Her 14th kill made the score 14-12 and put the Yellowjackets on the verge of victory.

Point 15 came on a ball that floated around the Frazee front line but the Hornets were unable to complete what would have been a valiant comeback as the ball landed out of bounds left of court.

Perham led the entire first set, which ended on a Brooke Mickelson kill for a 25-21 victory and early 1-0 lead.

Set two saw ties at 13 and 14 before Perham held the lead to take the set 25-22.

"Momentum was key. We had it in games one and two, Frazee in games three and four, Perham in five. Frazee did a fantastic night keeping our spikes off of the floor on their side and outlasting us on volleys, especially in games three and four."

The Hornets took command in game three early after Perham looked to seal the match going up 6-1. The Hornet rallies only allowed Perham four more points and after taking a 17-10 lead Frazee rattled off the final eight points to win 25-10.

Frazee refused to let the ball hit the floor in game four leading by as much as 13 points at 22-9. Perham mustered little offense and found themselves chasing after the ball in the backcourt as the Hornets dictated play for a 25-12 victory setting up the tie-breaking fifth set.

Regardless of the outcome, there was a higher purpose to the evening making both teams winners.

"Coaching players playing a game is one thing," Christenson said. "Teaching high school-aged girls how to "make a difference" in the world, is a totally different and much more important thing. Tonight, Perham and Frazee volleyball programs did just that. We 'payed it forward' and that is how both teams come out as victors tonight."

Perham improves to 7-12 (3-1 HOL) and will travel to Pequot Lakes Thursday before an all-day 16-team Perham Invitational Tournament at Prairie Wind Middle School. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Frazee drops to 12-11 (0-4 HOL) and will host Waubun next Monday.
