Updated: Perham football receiving votes in latest 3A poll

Perham's defeat of previously-ranked Detroit Lakes on the road has garnered the Yellowjackets votes in the latest Class 3A football poll. A big win over East Grand Forks tonight -- in a poll that has three previously unranked teams in the top 10 -- could see the Yellowjackets moving up.

Perham has also cracked the top 20 in the QRF.

Tom Miller, of the Grand Forks Herald, previews East Grand Forks' own rankings needs tonight at Meinhover Field.

Senior High at Perham

East Grand Forks Senior High coach Scott Oliver isn't sure what the exact postseason implications are for Wednesday's regular-season finale in Perham.

Minnesota high school football will seed the postseason for the first time with a mathematical system known as the QRF (Quality Results Formula).

"It's like the secret recipe for Coke, locked away in a vault somewhere," Oliver said.

According to the current rankings, Senior High is ranked 42nd in Class AAA with 28.7 points. The Green Wave trail Park Rapids, which has a score of 28.9.

It's a peculiar and important two-tenths of a point. Park Rapids' edge would give it a home game over the Green Wave for the first round of the Section 8 playoffs -- even though the Wave routed the Panthers last week 32-8.

Park Rapids' win over Pequot Lakes earlier this year has gone a long ways in the formula, which takes into account strengths of schedule.

A win over Perham Wednesday would take plenty of angst out of the rankings watch for the Wave.

Perham is led by quarterback Jordan Hein, who has passed for 1,029 yards and rushed for 823.

"You don't come across too many quarterbacks that put up those numbers," Oliver said. "We need to contain him. I don't think you can completely stop a player like him."
