Girls basketball: Jackets drop third in a row

The Perham Yellowjackets girls basketball team dropped their third game of the season at Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 65-50.

Perham kept within a 10-point margin until late in the game when Caitlin Volkmann hit her fifth three-pointer of the night to push the lead to 13. The clock did the rest of the work.

"We continue to search for our first win and some consistent play," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said. "We are still turning the ball over too much and not defending the guards of other teams well enough to win games."

The Wolverines were good on shots nearly half of the time--19 of 40 from two-point land and seven of 14 from three. They shot six for 11 from the free throw line.

In comparison, Perham made no threes in only two attempts and were a respectable 46 percent from the field and eight of 15 from the line.

The difference was seven threes to zero, a 21-0 advantage for the home team.

"W-DC shot well and controlled our offense with their stingy zone defense. They went on a run to end the first half and got up by double digits and we could never close the gap in the second half."

Volkmann had 23 points. Avery Jackson had 19 for the Wolverines.

Perham's Katrina Moenkedick poured in 25 points to lead all scorers and was 12 of 16 shooting. Becky Stoll had 12 points and a game-high six assists. Lexy Karvonen scored nine points.

Perham (0-3) hung with the Wolverines in the second half, only being outscored by four points, 33-29. An 11-point deficit by halftime was just too much to overcome against such hot shooting from Wadena-Deer Creek (4-1).

"We are going to need to play much better defense if we are going to break out of this losing skid to start the season."

The Jackets will get another shot at win number one tonight, Friday, Dec. 9, at home versus Breckenridge (2-0). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip at Prairie Wind Middle School.
