Girls basketball: Perham girls go to overtime for first victory

Becky Stoll made a three-point shot at the regulation buzzer to force overtime and the Yellowjackets outscored Breckenridge 6-4 in the extra session to prevail, for the first time in four games, 57-55.

"We were able to make one or two more plays than Breckenridge in overtime to come out on top," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

Stoll had 12 points and seven rebounds. Katrina Moenkedick led Perham with 16 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Lexy Karvonen had nine points, eight rebounds and a steal.

Emily Tobkin was busy all over the floor with three points, two assists, one block, nine rebounds and a steal.

Breckenridge had three players score in double digits: Alison Meyer 16, Amber Vold 14, and Kennedy Conzemius 10.

"Breckenridge shot the ball well from the outside and we once again struggled to find a rhythm against a zone defense."

Perham led by one at the break, 31-30, before both defenses put the brakes on scoring leading to the Cowgirls putting up 21 points to Perham's 20 in the second half.

Baskets by Karvonen and Moenkedick gave Perham a two-point lead in overtime, followed by a free throw from Breckenridge's Sierra Steckler, which cut Perham's advantage to a single point in the waning seconds.

Moenkedick hit another free throw for the game's final point leaving just a few ticks on the clock.

"It was extremely encouraging to see the girls battle back late in the second half and make such a big play to give themselves a chance in overtime. We still need to cut way down on the turnovers, but we will enjoy this one as we head into next week looking to improve."
