Girls Basketball: Trojans beat Jacket girls on buzzer beater

Streaks came to an end on a buzzer beater by Barnesville's Nicole Halverson, who scored in the waning seconds to notch the Trojans' first victory of the season, 60-59, over Perham in Barnesville Thursday night.

"It was a hard fought game as it always seems to be when we travel to Barnesville," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

Halverson scored on an inbounds play with two seconds remaining in the game.

The victory snaps a season-opening four game skid for Barnesville (1-4) and ends a two-game win streak for Perham (2-4), after the Jackets started the season 0-3.

"They were able to make the one big play at the end of the game," said Gullingsrud.

Becky Stoll, 15 points, and Katrina Moenkedick, 23 points, led Perham on offense. Both players logged over 30 game minutes.

No other Yellowjacket scored more than six points.

The Trojans had three players in double figures: Sydney Boom scored 14, while Kailee Martinson and Ali Buth both put up 11 points.

Barnesville outrebounded Perham 40-30, while Perham, thanks to Moenkedick, put up 22 steals to the Trojans' 10.

Moenkedick started the game with two steals that led to early buckets and had eight total in the game. Stoll picked Barnesville pockets five times.

Perham scored 16 points off of turnovers.

The Yellowjackets have a week off until Thursday, Dec. 22 when they host Crosby-Ironton at 7:30 p.m.

"It can be difficult to rebound from a loss like this, but we need to keep plugging away and improving in areas like free throw shooting and turnovers if we want to come out on top in close games like these," said Gullingsrud.

Free throws were a key to the final score. Barnesville made 11 of their 15 attempts (73.3 percent) to 43.4 percent for the Jackets (10/23).
