Lady Jackets take Fergus Falls' tourney consolation game

The Perham Yellowjackets girls basketball team improved to 3-6 on the season defeating Breckenridge for the second time this year, 58-54, in the third place game at the Fergus Falls holiday tournament.

"We were able to make some big free throws late to sneak out with the win," Head Coach John Gullingsrud said.

The game was close early before scoring swung in a 17-point pendulum from an early Cowgirls' 10-point advantage in the first half to a tie at the break and a seven-point advantage for the Yellowjackets with a few minutes remaining in the game.

"Our girls stepped up their defense and were able to go on a run," said Gullingsrud.

Perham was unable to hold the lead in the waning minutes, as turnovers led a late tie before the Jackets won the game at the free throw line.

Katrina Moenkedick led all scorers with 20 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Sierra Steckler and Amber Vold, both of Breckenridge, scored 19 points. Perham's Becky Stoll had 17 and Lexy Karvonen scored nine, including Perham's only three-pointer of the game.

Perham held a big advantage on the boards outrebounding Breckenridge 41-26.

Free throw shooting became a key statistic as the game continued.

After a dismal start at the free throw line, going only 2-8 in the first half, Perham shooters combined to go 15 of 20 in the second half (75 percent).

Stoll was 11-13 from the stripe.

Overall, Perham shot 17-28 (60 percent).

Breckenridge shot 8-15 (53 percent) in the game.

The Perham junior varsity also claimed third place in the tournament with a win over Breckenridge after losing to Hawley in the opener.

Tanya Berns was named to the all-tournament team.

Perham (3-6) returns to Prairie Wind Middle School Thursday, Jan. 5, to face Pequot Lakes (4-6), in a Section 8-2A game.
