Girls Basketball: Jackets down Pirates in final minutes
The Perham girls basketball team (4-7) has had their share of close games this season. They have a record of 3-4 in seven games decided by five points or less after a 66-63 victory on the road in Crookston (5-6) Monday evening.
"It's a nice feeling to be on the other side of a close game as we haven't been able to find ways to win these types of games this season," Head Coach John Gullingsrud.
The Yellowjackets made big plays on both ends of the court late in the game.
After staying within striking distance for most of the first half, but never having the lead, Perham came out and played the strongest ten minutes of the year to start the second half and take a 10-point lead.
"We weren't able to hold that led late and found ourselves down by three with a minute to go."
Perham scored the last six points of the game.
"The girls never panicked in the last minute."
Four seniors stepped up their games Katrina Moenkedick, 18 points, Becky Stoll, 17 points, Lexy Karvonen, 11 points, and Suzanne Coleman, 10 points, led the team in scoring.
Fellow senior Kenzi Kovar played some big minutes in the second half and contributed two momentum-changing shots.
"Hopefully, we can carry some of this momentum into our game Thursday as we know how good Hawley is."
The Nuggets are ranked #6 in Class 2A with a record of 8-1. Their only loss was to #2-3A Fergus Falls, 60-43.
