Boys Basketball: Yellowjackets take care of rival Nuggets

The last time the Hawley Nuggets came to Perham to face the boys basketball team, a depleted Yellowjacket squad faced the brink of elimination in sub-section playoffs, ultimately, defeating Hawley 65-59 in overtime in mid-March of last season.

Jordan Bruhn missed the game, due to pneumonia, and was replaced by Jordan Hein.

This year's team has missed Hein's versatility all season due to injury. Throw in the absence of Sam Stratton, who transferred to Fargo, and this game has a few similarities.

Despite missing two of last year's key contributors to Perham's first-ever state championship, the Jackets have compiled a 17-2 record, including Friday's comfortable victory over Hawley 56-38.

"I'm proud of these guys that have stepped up and filled some roles that haven't been there for us," Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap said.

Perham has not lost to Hawley since the Nuggets ended the Jackets' 2009-10 campaign in the playoffs.

The Nuggets have the unenviable task of back-to-back games with the No. 5 and No. 4 teams in Class 2A. After the defeat in Perham, Hawley begins a six-game home stand to end the season by hosting Pelican Rapids Tuesday, February 14.

Jordan Bruhn flipped the switch into his scoring mode and led all shooters with 18 points. Aside from one three-pointer, all of Bruhn's baskets came from attacking the hoop.

Josh Nordick missed only one bucket in five attempts in an 11-point scoring night.

Mike Wiskow continues to use his speed and agility to make things happen in the paint. He pulled in nine rebounds to lead Perham on the boards.

Wiskow, who commonly is called upon to defend the toughest opponents, provided more numbers that do not accrue on the stat sheet.

"He got his hands on 22 different balls, either tipped rebounds or deflected passes," Cresap said. "He's bought into his role and is willing to do whatever it takes to make his team successful."

Ben Ellefson led the Nuggets scoring a big double-double of 16 rebounds and 16 points.
