BARRETT -- Maison Roberts and Shane Novak both won section titles and were joined by Max Carlson and Tyler Ehnert, as New York Mills will send four wrestlers to the Class A state wrestling tournament this weekend.

Novak, a runner-up at state last season, was no surprise, but he almost got one in the section 6A final versus Wadena-Deer Creek's Mitch Steffens.

Steffens jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Novak roared back with six unanswered points to take the title.

Novak had little trouble in the quarters and semifinals. He pinned West Central Area's Jake Larkin in 57 second on Larkin's home mat in the semis. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Zach Wain got similar treatment in the quarters. Novak pinned him in 1:39.

Novak improves his record to 38-1 at 113 pounds.

138-pound Roberts swept all three of his matches to the finals.

An opening 1:08 pin sent Parkers Prairie's Alex Plasky to the loser's bracket quickly.

Roberts won a major decision, 16-3, over Hayden Truax, of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale, in the semifinals and defeated Barnesville's Seth Hirsch 9-5 in a championship decision.

Roberts is 29-6 this season.

Heavyweight Max Carlson, who has shown some inspired wrestling this season, made a trip to St. Paul possible with a true second victory over Barnesville's Alec Wheelright, by fall, at 3:26.

Carlson defeated Border West's Bradan Krump with a pin at 1:17 in the quarters. He won a 3-1 decision over Anwar Sharmarke of Pelican Rapids in a rematch of a thrilling overtime victory over Sharmarke a couple weeks ago.

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Colin Turchin secured the section title with a quick pin of Carlson at 36 seconds in the final.

Wheelright advanced with a win over Sharmarke in the third place match to set up Carlson's true second victory.

Carlson's record this season is 24-15.

Tyler Ehnert took a similar route to state with a true second victory after advancing to the finals.

Border West's Gus McCarthy won the section title at 126 pounds defeating Ehnert by fall at 1:42.

Ehnert advanced with wins over West Central's Sean Albert in the quarters by fall 3:07 and a semifinal victory over a familiar foe, Carlos Gutierrez by a narrow decision 3-2.

Gutierrez defeated Wadena-Deer Creek's Devin Barthel 6-5 in the quarters sending Barthel to the loser's bracket. Barthel won three times there, including a 2:21 pin in a rematch with Gutierrez to advance to face Ehnert.

Ehnert pinned Barthel at 2:56 to improve his season record to 23-19.

Noah Pesola (182) and Tyler Patron (195), who reached state for the Eagles last season, both finished in third place at sections this year.

Jeremiah Harper (106) also finished in third place missing state by one match.
