Pelican Rapids too much for Breckenridge in boys section tournament

MOORHEAD - The dust settled before the first half was over and Breckenridge became just another victim of a Pelican Rapids blitzkrieg. It's not easy matching up with the Vikings.

Several teams have felt it this year including the Cowboys. The 75-45 victory Saturday night at Concordia's Memorial Auditorium moves Pelican Rapids into Tuesday's Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 boys basketball semifinal.

"They're very difficult to match up with," said Breckenridge head coach Dean Haugo. "They're solid top to bottom."

They're solid frontcourt to backcourt, too. With guards Ryan Bruggeman and Casey Bruggeman running up and down the court with gusto, there was little doubt who had the upper hand.

Casey Bruggeman had 19 of his 21 points in the first half and Ryan had 14 of his 22 to pace a 43-27 halftime lead. It made it a tough go for the Cowboys, who started two freshmen.

"He has some nice young kids and you never know how young kids will react," said Pelican Rapids head coach Brad Strand, when asked if he thought his team was ready after two regular-season drubbings. "In my mind, there was no doubt about that. It helps when we came out of the gate and played well."

Pelican's wins over the Cowboys in the regular season came by 50 and 33 points. The hope this time, Haugo said, was to get the Vikings spread out and hope to take their size away.

"Anything we tried, they had an answer for," he said. "We thought maybe we had a few ideas from the first times we played but they are an all-around excellent team. They're a seasoned team."

The Cowboys' Ryan Rettig led all scorers with 25 points.
