Softball: Ottertail Central ends Eagles win streak; win at Menahga

NEW YORK MILLS -- The Eagles softball team had their season opening six-game win streak snapped by conference foe Ottertail Central in NY Mills. The Bulldogs swept the Eagles 5-2 and 17-7.

The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in game one when EmaLeigh Roberts singled and stole second and third base. She scored on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Amy Nebosis to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

The teams traded runs in the second and third innings.

NY Mills regained the lead in the third when Kristin Kane scored after reaching base with a leadoff double.

The Eagles would maintain their 2-1 advantage until the fourth inning when the bottom of the Bulldog's order rallied to score three runs. OTC added an insurance run in the seventh inning for the 5-2 final.

Autumn Roberts pitched a complete game for NY Mills. She went seven innings, allowing seven hits. Two of the five runs were earned. She walked five and struck out two.

EmaLeigh Roberts led the Eagles at the plate going 2-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored.

Jenna Esala, Nebosis, LeAnn Flanigan, Brooklyn Frost and Kane all went 1-3 hitting. Kane had a run scored. Nebosis and Frost had the team's runs batted in.

The Bulldog bats were humming in game two forcing three Eagle pitchers to take the rubber.

The pair of losses dropped the Eagles to second place in the Park Region Conference with a record of 6-2. The Bulldogs ascend to the top of the standings at 8-0.

The Eagles managed runs in each of the first four innings to put up seven, but went down in order in their final at-bats in the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs put up a pair in the first, one in the second, five in the third, six in the fourth and two for good measure in their final at-bats.

Alexis Rankka took the loss pitching three innings, allowing eight runs, all earned. She fanned a pair and walked seven.

Flanigan and Autumn Roberts made relief appearances. The Bulldogs scored seven runs off of Flanigan and two off of Roberts.

Autumn Roberts led the Eagles in hitting going 2-3 with two runs scored.

Lydia Irons had two RBI.

The Eagles were struck out nine times, accounting for three innings of outs at the plate.

The Bulldogs had five batters with at least two hits.

Senior Brenna Kimber went 3-5 scoring twice.

Leadoff hitter Rosie Johnson was a menace offensively. She was 2-3 with four runs scored and three RBI.

MENAHGA -- The Eagles hit the road to Menahga (4-3) and got back on the winning track completing the sweep of the Braves with an 11-7 victory.

Autumn Roberts had a huge game at the plate going 5-5 with four singles and double. She scored five runs and stole four bases.

EmaLeigh Roberts was 2-4 with two runs scored, four stolen bases and was hit by a pitch.

The game was tied at four after four innings of play.

The Eagles sealed the game scoring once in the sixth and five big insurance runs in the seventh.

Autumn Roberts picked up the victory pitching another complete seven innings. She faced 33 batters, striking out one, walking two. She scattered a dozen hits and four of the seven runs were earned.

Esala was 3-5 scoring once. Flanigan was 2-5 with a stolen base.

In the latest May 1 Class A softball poll, the Eagles dropped from their peak position so far at number four to number nine after the sweep to OTC.

The Bulldogs are flying under pollsters radar having not received a vote in the May 1 poll.
